My plans for the future is to attend a 4 year university and study either Molecular Genetics or Neuroscience. I know I want to go into the medical field, but I am still not 100% sure about what I want to specialize in. I want to go to a reasearch university where I can conduct undergraduate research and study abroad.

JOB SHADOW: JOB REFLECTIVE NARRATIVE
I shadowed Doctor Joel Ramirez, a sports medicine specialist, at the Living Water Clinic here in Lindsay. I arrived at the clinic at 9:00am, dressed semi formally, and introduced myself to Dr. Ramirez. I choose to job shadow Dr. Ramirez because as a medical doctor he knows just how difficult it is to go to med-school, take the MCAT, Board Exams, and complete your residency. These were things I knew would help me in my journey to become a doctor. In my job shadow I followed Dr. Ramirez as he meet with his patients and treated them.
In the beginning of my job shadow I talked to Dr. Ramirez about my background. I explained my drive to become a doctor was because of my grandma’s death. Then I told him about my family, how both my parents immigrated from Mexico to the U.S. and how my sister was in her second year at UCLA. He then talked to me about how he went to Fresno City College for two years and how he struggled with math. He was then able to transfer to UCLA as a pre-med student. He advised me not to take that many science classes my first two years of college or else I would burn myself out. He also told me what book helped him study for the MCAT, when I should take the MCAT, and what I should look for in a med-school. I gained a lot of valuable information. He then explained what medical school actually consists of, the first two years are just courses, while last two years are clinical. He also told me what I would have to take board examsin medical school and have to get good grades on those. After that Dr. Ramirez went to see some patients and I went with him. I saw him as he examed people coming in for various reason. One of the very first things Dr. Ramirez told me was that the patient information needed to be kept confidential. I also saw how the other doctors would give oral reports about a patients condition. They used a lot of medical terminology, but Dr. Ramirez understood all of it and then he would tell them what the next course of action would be. I learned that doctors can't be discouraged by failure. Especially in medical school, it is so competivive and you have to be okay with failing but stay motivated. Beyond everything you have to do your best and not get distracted by parties or relationships. I also learned that doctors need politicians to lobby for them. Doctors need to be able to multi task with different stimuli all around youand be focused on all patients at once. Dr. Ramirez also told me that I should figure out what field I want to go into by the end of my 3 year at med school. I also learned that when you are doing your residency you work around 80 hours a week, but do not paid enough for the amount of work you are doing. I am even more interested in the medical field than I was before. Job shadowing Dr. Ramirez helped me affirm my desire to become a doctor. I always knew it was going to be hard but now I know what to expect. I don't know if I would specialize in sports medicine but now I know that I can make that decision when I'm in my third year of med school. It is a field of medicine I would like to explore, thanks to my job shadow. |
